Five Great Wines for Father’s Day
Father’s Day is Sunday! A lot of families will be celebrating by firing up the grill, so I’ve picked five great wines for Father’s Day that go nicely with various father favorite grilled items.

With Burgers
I’m going to make a sangria. According to this excellent article, I should use Tempranillo, but I’m going to go with La Paca Garnacha from Trader Joe’s. As an inexpensive Spanish red, I think it’ll do nicely. Plus, it’ll save me a trip since I’ll already be at Trader Joe’s picking up fixin’s for the bbq and fruit for the sangria.
With Steaks
J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon. This is my go to red. It’s a crowd pleaser, inexpensive, and I can always find it at the grocery store. If you’re looking for something smooth and easy to drink, this is it.
With Chicken
This kind of depends. For a more traditional bbq chicken dish, especially one that’s marinated Filipino style, I’d go with a Gewürztraminer. Gewürztraminer has long been a favorite in my family and it has developed a reputation for pairing well with Asian food. I like Hogue’s.
We’ll be having chicken souvlaki, (and maybe dad’s Farm Burger recipe) so I’m picking a Greek white. I’m going to go with Sigalas Aa Assyrtiko-Athiri Santorini 2015. To learn more about Greek wines, may I suggest this article at winefolly.com.
With Anything
It’s a celebration, so break out the bubbly! I wrote about champagnes and sparkling wines for Mother’s Day. For Father’s Day, we’ll be having Veuve Clicquot. I bought it at Costco around New Year’s and it’s still sitting on the shelf. No time like the present!
So there you have it, my picks for Father’s Day wines! Raise a glass to the Dads in your life and happy Father’s day to you all!
